Understanding Cell Phone Memory Card Terminology

Buying a memory card for your unlocked cell phone can be frustrating, especially if you don't understand the terminology. From gigabytes to Micro SD.. what does all this stuff mean and how can you make sure you are getting what you need?

The first step to understanding cell phone memory cards is understanding what everything means. Here's a quick look at the terminology:

MB: The megabyte is a term representing the amount of storage memory card has. Today, most memory cards needed today should have at least 1 gigabyte (see below) of storage. However, if you don't need that much space, megabytes will do and will cost less. A megabyte is equal to 1,048,576 bytes.

GB: GB stands for gigabyte and just like megabyte, it is a measure of disk space. Basically you should know that the larger the gigabytes the more space you have and the more expensive the memory card will be. 1 gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes.

microSD: microSD is a special format specifically for removable flash memory cards. Basically if you are purchasing a memory card it should say mircroSD or microSDHC (see below). The SD stands for Secure Digital.

microSDHC: microSDHC cards are Secure Digital High-Capacity cards are a newer version of flash memory cards. SDHC have a minimum capacity of 4GB but unfortunately are not compatible with all devices.

Okay, now that you know the terms, let’s put it all together. When purchasing a memory card for your cell phone online you will see something like this Kingston 4GB Micro SD Memory Card from VibeCellular below. Kingston represents the brand, 4 GB represents the storage, and Micro SD represents the type or format of flash memory.

Now it all makes sense! So remember for all your cell phone accessories visit http://www.vibecellular.com/. Vibe cellular has the biggest brand names at the lowest prices – all ready to ship right to your door.
